How Safe Are Pediatric Eye Exams

As adults, we understand the importance of getting regular eye exams from an eye doctor, but what about children? We often encounter a common question, "How safe are pediatric eye exams?" At Today's Vision, our optometrist in Frisco, Dr. Cheng, specializes in family eye care, which means that we see younger patients who depend on us to see clearly and comfortably.

What Is A Pediatric Eye Exam?

Children need to have routine exams with a pediatric optometrist. Children's eyes are changing rapidly, so they can develop vision problems without you or them even knowing it. A pediatric eye exam is a thorough evaluation of your child's vision and eyes, inside and out. Some of the tests that we use include the following:

Visual acuity test: This is the Snellen eye chart test that you are probably familiar with. The test measures how clearly your child sees at near and far distances.

Visual field test: This measures your child's peripheral or side vision.

Cover and pupil test: These tests will measure how well your child's eyes work together and how the pupil responds to light.

We will also screen for eye health problems. To do this, we will dilate your child's eyes during the exam to get a good look at the back of the eye and check for certain conditions like amblyopia, strabismus, or refractive error.

The Safety of Pediatric Exams

Children need to be able to see properly in school to learn and grow. That is why comprehensive eye exams are so important for children of all ages. Pediatric eye exams are completely safe and non-invasive. The dilation drops that are used aren't dangerous for your children and help us get the best possible look at their eyes.
