What Conditions Can LASIK Correct?

LASIK, or laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis, can correct common refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. During the surgery, the cornea is reshaped in order to improve your eyesight.

Who Is a Good Candidate for LASIK Surgery?

Ideal candidates for LASIK surgery are adults with relatively stable corrective vision prescriptions and a sufficient corneal thickness. If your corneas cannot tolerate LASIK, our eye doctor may recommend an alternative procedure, such as PRK or LASEK, which use slightly different methods to achieve the same results.

What Can You Expect During the Procedure?

Your eye surgeon will give you a sedative to keep you calm and relaxed during your LASIK procedure. After numbing the eye, the surgeon will use a laser surgery to make a flap in the outer tissue of the cornea. After pulling this flap aside, he or she will use the laser tool to vaporize corneal tissue in a precise pattern in order to correct your vision. The flap is then put back into place and should heal without the need for sutures. The procedure typically takes less than 10 minutes for each eye. You may notice an improvement in your eyesight as early as the next day, however, it may take weeks or months to achieve clear vision.
