Cataracts

Cataracts are a common eye condition that develop in older adults. However, there are rare instances that can cause young people and even newborns to develop cataracts. If you have cataracts, you may notice symptoms like blurry vision and colors appearing less vivid or vibrant. At Today’s Vision 380 in Frisco, TX, we provide comprehensive eye exams to accurately diagnose cataracts and provide treatment to help you see clearly.

Cataracts

What is a Cataract?

A cataract is a buildup of protein that forms on the lens of the eye. Cataracts can usually be found in both eyes, however, they often progress at different rates. They may not be noticeable initially, but with time, you will see a cloudy film that is covering the lens of your eye. While cataracts are typically seen in adults who are 40 years old or older, they can also occur in kids and babies on rare occasions. If you have cataracts, you may experience symptoms like blurry vision, faded colors, poor vision at night, and halos around lights.

Cataract Treatment

When you visit us, our optometrist will perform an eye exam to determine if you have cataracts. If the presence of cataracts has been confirmed, we will provide treatment that will help you achieve clearer vision. Cataracts can often be managed with contact lenses or glasses. However, since cataracts are progressive, it's possible that eyeglasses and contact lenses may become less effective over time. Once this happens, our optometrist may recommend surgery to remove the cataracts. Surgery is often suggested if your vision has become impaired and is preventing you from driving or performing routine tasks. A surgeon will remove the cloudy lens that has formed over your eye and replace the damaged lens with an artificial one, which will improve your vision.

Surgery for Cataracts

Cataract removal is common, safe, and can help you see clearly. However, it is important to pay attention to any unusual symptoms that you may occur after the surgery. If you experience pain, swelling, or the artificial lens becomes dislocated or moves, it is important to notify our optometrist. In rare cases, a patient may develop an eye infection. If you notice any unusual symptoms after your surgery, simply give us a call.
