Blue Light Glasses
Blue light is a natural light that is produced by the sun. Blue light improves your mood and alertness. Blue light is also nature's way of letting your body know the difference between nighttime and daytime. It is high in intensity and the eye does not do a good job blocking this wavelength of light as it enters and heads to the back of the retina. Some research suggests that blue light may damage the retina or cause vision disorders like macular degeneration. At Today's Vision, our optometrist is an expert in the ways that blue light impacts your health and vision. We provide quality eye care and eyewear for residents in Prosper, Aubrey, Celina, Little Elm, Northern Frisco, McKinney, and Frisco, TX.
What Are Blue Light Glasses?
Some patients report that the blue light given off by digital devices like computers, tablets, and smartphones leaves them with headaches and eye fatigue. The best solution for that is reducing your screen time. But that is not possible for everyone so we recommend blue light glasses for some of our patients. Blue light blocking glasses have specially crafted lenses that can filter out the blue light given off from digital screens. These lenses can protect your eyes from glare and help reduce potential damage to your retina. Computer users do not blink as much as they normally would while they are staring at a screen. In addition to wearing blue light glasses, we often suggest a regular regimen of eye drops for moisture.
Blue Light at Night
Staring at the blue light of a screen can interrupt your regular sleep patterns. Blue light can signal your brain that is time to wake up instead of time to go to sleep. We advise our patients whether they wear blue light glasses or not, to discontinue all screen use for a few hours before bedtime.
Regular Eye Exams
Visiting an optometrist every year for a comprehensive eye exam is the best way to monitor your eye health and detect any vision problems at the earliest stages. An annual eye exam can reveal any problems that have been caused by blue light exposure.
